  • Cooper Gifts Meals to Camden Seniors for Thanksgiving Day

Cooper University Health Care, the Cooper Foundation, volunteers and community leaders handed out free meals to seniors in FSHD’s Northgate II high-rise. “For more than 130 years, Cooper has been a premier community partner with an unmatched history of doing outstanding work in our neighborhoods and investing resources in our community,” said Mayor Frank Moran. Marilyn Mock, policy director for wellness services at Northgate II, took a moment to speak with the volunteers: “I just wanted to let you know how much this means to our residents here. The holidays are really difficult for many of us who have lost loved one and a lot of our tenants have lost others too…Just knowing that people they don’t even know took the time out of your busy schedule around the holidays, to tell them that is something that’s really important.”

  • Camden Seniors Receive Health Support Home Visits from Rutgers‒Camden Nursing Students

Yaazmyn Rosa’s weekly visit to Camden’s Northgate II affordable housing complex to help residents manage their healthcare needs is one of the most rewarding and inspiring experiences in her education at Rutgers University‒Camden. Rosa and her classmates in the accelerated bachelor of science in nursing program are among a team of health care workers and social workers who provide in-home consultations to solve complex care issues for elderly residents. Since 2018, Rutgers School of Nursing‒Camden students have had the opportunity to work with Northgate II residents through the New Jersey Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (NJGWEP), led by the Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM). It is a unique partnership between Rowan and the Rutgers School of Nursing‒Camden to provide interprofessional experiential learning to students in managing elderly residents’ complex care issues.

A 2009 study by Dr. Jeffrey Brenner and the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers revealed “hot spots”— or geographic areas in the city with extensive use of these expensive medical services. Patients from just 6% of Camden’s city blocks accounted for 27% of all of the city’s emergency department (ED) visits and 37% of its ED costs.Northgate II, an affordable housing property in North Camden, was one of the city’s two primary hot spots, according to Brenner’s research. Dr. Brenner approached Fair Share Housing Development in 2011 to see if the organization would be interested in working with the Camden Coalition to reduce the extensive and unnecessary ED and hospital visits among Northgate II residents. Fair Share eagerly agreed.
