Frank Ivey

Frank is a graduate of our healthy cooking class and Northgate II’s six-week Chronic Disease Self-Management Program.

“It is always good for outside resources to come in to offer health classes for people who need help,” Frank says. “If it wasn’t for the wellness program, residents would not be getting the proper care. It’s a blessing.”

Frank Ivey has lived at Northgate II for a decade. A Philadelphia native, Mr. Ivey has been a Camden resident since 1999. Mr. Ivey, 64, has struggled to manage his major health issue which is blood pressure. He spends much of his time caring for older family members who also live in Camden but he manages to squeeze in time to participate in the health related programming offered at Northgate II. He is a graduate of Northgate II’s six-week Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) , an evidenced-based health promotion program developed by Stanford University and facilitated by two social services staff who are Master Trainers in CDSMP. Mr. Ivey states that the social services department has helped him “a great deal” and added that the “social service staff are always concerned about residents.”

Mr. Ivey also participated in Northgate II’s six-week Cooking Matters class conducted by the Food Bank of South Jersey. “It is always good for outside resources to come in to offer health classes for people who need help”, he says.

Since participating in both the CDSMP and the Cooking Matters classes, Mr. Ivey admits that the classes have been helpful and educational. “They have helped me to cook better, to use proper ingredients like not using salt and to improve my eating habits”, he reports.

In regard to the overall health program at Northgate II, he said, “If it wasn’t for this program, residents would not be getting the proper care. It’s a blessing.”
